Who I amI am Dr. Afina S. Lockhart, an accomplished educational leader with over 25 years of experience. My journey began with a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from Hampton University in Virginia. Transitioning from a credit analyst to teaching, I pursued a Master of Arts degree in Secondary Education with an endorsement in General Science from Roosevelt University in Chicago. Continuing my education, I earned a Doctorate of Curriculum and Instruction from Loyola University Chicago, along with endorsements in School Supervision and Superintendent's Endorsement, showcasing my dedication to educational leadership.
Throughout my career, I've held diverse leadership roles, including founding charter school teacher, district-wide administrator, assistant principal, principal, and assistant superintendent, allowing me to make a positive impact in various educational capacities. Beyond my professional roles, I actively engage in community service through Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Chicago Metropolitan Alumnae Chapter, and serve on the Board of Directors for Pilot Light Chicago, highlighting my commitment to social responsibility. Advocating for diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging is central to my work. My dedication to the success and liberation of Black teachers and students has earned me respect in the educational field. Through visionary leadership and innovative strategies, I strive for positive change in pursuit of educational excellence. As the oldest of 7 siblings and the proud aunt of 6 nieces and 5 nephews in cities like Chicago, Houston, Memphis, and Dallas, my personal journey is intertwined with family. Additionally, I am a proud dog-mom to Coco, a rescue Shih-Tzu/Maltese from New Orleans, Louisiana. Why I Joined BWELI became a member of BWEL driven by a profound commitment to contribute to a collaborative community dedicated to the empowerment and recognition of black women in educational leadership roles. BWEL stands as a platform that goes beyond a mere association; it's a dynamic and purpose-driven collective. My decision to join was fueled by the desire to actively engage in initiatives that foster collaboration, provide meaningful support, and celebrate the invaluable contributions of black women leaders in the field of education.
Being part of BWEL allows me to align with like-minded individuals who share a common vision for advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in educational leadership. This collaborative effort is designed to break barriers, create opportunities, and amplify the voices of black women who are making significant strides in shaping the landscape of education. The shared commitment to building a supportive community is particularly empowering, recognizing that collective strength and unity enhance our collective impact. BWEL provides me with a platform to honor and celebrate the achievements, resilience, and leadership excellence of black women educators. It serves as a beacon of inspiration for aspiring leaders while highlighting the accomplishments of those who have blazed trails in education.
